It’s an issue plaguing many an emerging (and current) leader: the issue of authenticity.
How do you behave when you’re “on” as a leader versus when you’re “off”? Are you different people?
For those of you who were fans of Friends, you’ll probably remember the time Chandler and Monica attempted to take an engagement photo and Chandler’s cheesy smile foiled them time and again. Monica loves his natural smile, but every time he actually looks at a camera, the following awkwardness ensues:
So often we think that because we’re leaders we have to be a certain something–we have to behave or carry ourselves a certain way. There’s this perception that we need to “put on a face” or a persona that “makes us a leader,” when in fact the opposite is true. True leadership must have true authenticity. The best leaders are authentic! Their “on” and their “off” face are exactly the same, whether they’re speaking to a crowd of thousands or having coffee with a friend in their own living room. They’re comfortable with who they are and they behave that way.
Many new leaders look very different when they’re “onstage” than when they’re “backstage.” When they’re in the spotlight, they force it like Chandler trying to smile. They’re afraid to be themselves, as if their own self is not sufficient. But, as Chandler had to learn, the best smile is the natural one.
How can you be your best version of your authentic self?
Well, if you’d like some support getting there, I’d be happy to help.
